Configuring StorWize V3700
The storwize V3700 comes with usb flash drive, to let you easily configure the IP address from your computer instead of connecting a laptop and making a connection the old way.
Configuring the V3700 Device Connectivity
Connect the usb drive to your computer and start inittool.bat as an administrator. This will copy the application to your local drive (so you can safely remove the usb drive from your computer later on without having to shut down the application) from the usb flash drive and start the system initialization tool:
Click next and select to create a new system:
Configure IP settings:
Follow the displayed procedure:
1.Safely eject the USB flash drive from your personal computer. 2.Select one canister in the control enclosure. On the right side of that canister look for the LEDs. Ensure the LEDs are (from left to right) on, blinking, and off. And then, insert the USB flash drive in to any port on that canister. 3.Wait for the amber fault LED to stop blinking. It is the third LED on the right side of the canister. This process can take up to 5 minutes. 4.Remove the USB flash drive. 5.Reinsert the USB flash drive into your personal computer and click Next.
After plugging the usb drive back in your computer, the application tries to connect with it to verify the connectivity. So, this requires you to be in the same network. Fortunately, this is not a big problem if you're not, this will fail and you will just have to be in the correct network to continue configuring the V3700 from the web interface.
Configure the Appliance
Login screen:
The default username and password are:
superuser passw0rd
And you're immediately forced to change the password into something else.
Then the System Setup wizard starts:
Enter the system name you want to give it:
Yo get a message whenever a setting is applied, in this case the name:
Then setup the ntp server and time zone:
Again you'll get a message when the setting has been applied, and then you continue the wizard to the detected enclosures screen:
Then, when you confirmed the enclosure, you go through to the call home page, select yes to configure call home, which starts a new wizard. Click next to enter the System Location details:
Setup contact details:
Setup an email server IP address. Unfortunately a DNS name is not a valid address so you'll have to use an IP address:
Provide an email address to which the call home should be sent as well:
At the end of the call home wizard you get sent back to the system setup wizard to show you a summary, which also states that the pools will be created when the wizard completes:
Then, the next wizard starts, this time to configure the hosts. Click on the “Create Hosts” button to proceed:
Select the Fibre Channel Host Type:
Make sure the host is correctly connected and do a scan of the ports. Then, from the drop down list (Note that this list appears to be empty, you have to click to see the HBA cards) select the ports and click “add port to list”. Do this for all required ports and click “Create Host”:
Now the wizard allows you to start the task to create volumes, but because I first want to add the second host and because I want to check the RAID configuration before I configure the volumes I closed the wizard.
To add the second host, connect the host to the Storwize appliance and go to Hosts:
As you can see you can add a host here using the “New host” button. After doing this, you see both hosts. Note that they have a status of degraded because right now they are both connected with just one cable, but they have two ports configured:
After connecting two more cables both give the status online:
Configure the Storage
On the storwize systems you have disks which form raid sets, in which you create pools on which you create volumes. These volumes are used to create the actual datastores in vSphere again.
First we need to delete the default pools that have been created during setup. This uses a RAID-5 setup, but I want to configure a RAID-6 setup with one spare. The office where this device is being used is rather remote for us so it needs to be able to go on for a few days when a disk fails.
Go to Pools → Mdisks by Pools and expand the “mdiskgrp0” pool to see the mdisks the pool contains. Before the pool can be deleted, these mdisks have to be deleted first. Rightclick them, go to RAID actions and select “Delete”:
Note that the wizards asks for a verification of the number of RAID arrays you are deleting, this is 1:
Repeat that for all mdisks, and then rightclick the created pool called “mdiskgrp0” and select “delete pool”:
So go to Pools → Internal storage, click the drive class filter and select “Configure Storage”:
In the wizard that starts select a different configuration from the default, opt for Basic RAID-6 and select 10 disks for your configuration. As you can see on the left, there already is a spare disk in place so you don't need to configure an additional one:
The next step asks you to configure a pool. Select to create a new one, and name it:
Now it's time to create volumes which can be mapped to a host. Go to Pools → Volumes by Pool and click “New Volume”:
This will allow you to create all your volumes in one go:
Next, click create and map to host:
Click “Map volumes ” to map all selected volumes to the selected host. The wizard just allows you to select one host, but we have two, so we need to map the volumes to the different host as well. Go to Hosts → Hosts, select the host you need to map and from the actions menu select “Modify Mappings”:
Now select the volumes and move them to the right pane using the button shown below. When done, click “Map Volumes” to map the volumes to the host. You will receive a warning that now multiple hosts can access the volume. You can ignore this warning and proceed.
Now I want to edit the host mappings, to make sure they get different LUN IDs. This is not possible after you've made the mapping, so if you need this you need to unmap the volume, map it again and click the “Edit SCSI ID” to change it. Here you see that I've changed already two volumes like this:
Now your StorWize V3700 is ready to use.
